Why is America lacking in terms of education?
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, or NCES (nces.ed.gov): 23% of Americans don't graduate from high school. 35% of these students drop out before finishing the tenth grade. Also, 48% of Americans who do graduate have a comprehension of mathematics and science that is considered less-than-acceptable.80% of American high school students can't name their state and federal representatives and senators. This is very disturbing to me. But on whose lap does the fault lie? Parents? The 'No Child Left Behind' (NCLB) program? Mtv? Progressively sedentary lifestyles? Racial and gender inequality? A failing economy? I 'm not sure who, or what, is to blame.. However, I do know that the basic theory behind the NCLB program is to reward schools whose standardized test scores are better. At it's base level, this sounds like a good plan. The problem, however, is that the schools with lower test scores receive less funding and unfortunately, these schools are often inner-city, urban, predominately African American schools. States are responsible for setting the curriculum with very little oversight by the federal government. The $56 billion allocated in 2008 by the federal and state governments to education, when compared to the nation's 2008 defense budget of $481.4 billion, seems most meager. I think this money would be better spent on building up these lacking schools, rather than simply giving the money to the others. Educators receive nauseatingly poor salaries. Teaching is, perhaps, one of the noblest professions, yet teachers have less and less say in the methods and content they teach. We are falling so far behind in every field. We are producing fewer scientists every year. It is nothing short of sickening to compare us to other nations such as; Japan, Canada, Sweden, the Netherlands, Britain, France, Germany, and even China. 1.5 million parents have decided to home-school their children so that they receive a solid secondary education. It is still difficult for poor students to continue on to post-secondary schools. What do you think is the problem? How can we fix it?
The problem is the American system needs to be fixed. How can we fix it. We integrate to world schooling allowing student to learn where ever the education is better online with video teaching tutors. Then we bring that knowledge the skill here first to be teach all over the world. also the ability to delete improper teachings. We also take the value off of the price of education by publishing all books online no more paying for books, Only pay for hard copies by choice. Technology can do so much yet we do so little with it. Computers and video can change the way we learn. However the American government is more interested in Foreign policy and war then pushing education.
