Hurricane Sandy destroys Breezy Point, Queens
Hurricane Sandy struck with a vengeance on Oct. 29, 2012, causing unprecedented destruction as 80 mph winds and record storm surges wreaked havoc across the East Coast, flooding tunnels, destroying homes and leaving more than 8 million without power. The superstorm is one of the costliest to ever hit the region, with property damages estimated around $20 billion. Here, an aerial shot shows the burnt remains of Breezy Point, a beachfront neighborhood in Queens completely destroyed by fires during the monster hurricane. Storm-Stricken Parts of New Jersey on Wednesday
Barack
Obama toured storm-stricken parts of New Jersey on Wednesday with
the state's Republican
governor Chris Christie. With less than a week to go until election day, the
two made a show of putting aside political differences in the wake of super
storm Sandy.
President Obama offered words of comfort to those left bereaved by the storm.
"Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones. It is true that
because of some good preparation, the loss of life was kept lower than it
might have been but for those individual families, obviously their world has
been torn apart, and we need to make sure that everybody who has lost a
loved one knows they are in our thoughts and prayers, and I speak for the
whole country there," Mr Obama said.
Mr Christie, a vocal backer of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney,
praised the President for his response to the disaster, saying " I cannot
thank the President enough for his personal concern and compassion for our
state and for the people of our state."
